Oral Piercing Care Instructions

  •       Bleeding - The inside of the mouth has an excellent blood supply so expect some blood in your mouth during & after the procedure.

  •       Pain - Tylenol is an appropriate pain-reliever.  Do not use aspirin as it promotes bleeding.

  •       Swelling - Suck on ice or Popsicles to help reduce the swelling, which will inevitably occur over the next few days.

  •       Cleaning - You should rinse your oral piercing after eating, smoking, or drinking. Use the antiseptic mouthwash diluted half & half with water.  This should especially be done after smoking, eating anything with milk in it, or alcoholic beverages.  Do not use toothpaste or mouthwash that contains peroxide.

  •      Hygiene - Both Bacterial and viral infections can penetrate a healing piercing.  While healing avoid putting anything dirty in your mouth, e.g. coins, pens, other people's tongues, and refrain from kissing and oral sex.

  •       Safety Check - You should check that the ball is firmly screwed on to the barbell at least once a day.

  •      Warning - Even a healed piercing can close overnight. NEVER leave your jewelry out for more than a couple of hours, if you don't have to.

Days 2-7
  •       Food - At this point it will be difficult to talk & eat.  It is important to maintain your food intake during the healing period.  Cold foods are better tolerated than hot foods.  High-Calorie foods will keep up your energy levels - If you do not eat enough, the healing process may be delayed.  You should avoid anything spicy or hot.

  •       Cleaning  - Continue as described above.

  •       Swelling - The worst swelling occurs on days 2-5.

Weeks 2 - 8
  •       Changing Jewelry  - After 2 weeks your initial jewelry may at this point be longer than needed now that the swelling has gone away. Most people will want to see their piercer to be fitted with a shorter barbell or labret.  Do not do this yourself!

Healing - Your piercing will take at least 2 months to heal & start to become permanent.  Don't play with or chew on your piercing as this can lead to the formation of scar tissue.
