Skin Symbols H-K Hands: Hands represent our better natures, kindness, compassion, creativity. The classic tattoo of praying hands represents submission to the will of God. Hawk: Represented the soul in ancient Egypt. In medieval art the hawk is often shown tearing hares to pieces. The hare represented the baser instincts and the hawk was used as a symbol of the need to discipline oneself. Hearts: A universal symbol of love, unless it's just been ripped out of the body and is being suspended in mid-air, dripping blood. Helmet: In dream books it's seen as symbolizing hidden thoughts and oppression. Horse: In Roman mythology it was dedicated to Mars the God of war. Celts saw appearance of a white horse as an omen of death or visit from the fairies. Horses are also associated with the ocean. In Native American myths the horse was a creature of the earth and the sun. Hourglass: Symbolizes the inevitable passing of time. Ivy: The eunuch priests of Attis tattooed them-with patterns of ivy leaves. In most myths it is a symbol of protection for women. Knights: Somehow they manage to symbolize both aggression and civilization.
