Skin Symbols L-P

Leaf:  Another symbol in Chinese iconography, the leaf represents happiness.

Lion:  The king of beasts is linked with the sun and earth, and is the counterpart to the eagle who rules the sky.

Lotus:  In both Hindu and Egyptian mythology it symbolizes new life.

Monkey:  Myths about our nearest relatives portray them as clever and promiscuous creatures.

Monsters:  Symbols of chaos, nature gone out of control and rebellion against civilization.

Moon:  The changing shape of the moon has always fascinated humans.  Primarily a feminine symbol, (there are some moon god myths), the moon represents rebirth, regeneration, healing, and the psychic powers.

Names:  Take a look at any book on magic and you'll find multiple spells involving the use of names.  A person's name is directly linked to them, and thus manipulating the name will cause the person to fall under your power.  Vow tattooing, getting your lover's name inked into your skin, can be a very powerful magic.  It's also the tattoo that has been voted "most likely to be covered up."

Ocean:  The ocean symbolizes infinity, both of time and space, as do waves.

Octopus:  The octopus' leg-ends relate it to the spider and spider webs.  He is a symbol of both natural power and the power of the subconscious mind.

Owl:  This bird of night with its moon-shaped eyes was thought to see things that mere mortals could not, thus the owl gained a reputation for having wisdom.

Parrot:  With its red (fire), green (earth), blue (water), and gold (sun) feathers, the parrot wears the primary colors of Native South American spiritual traditions.  They symbolize the beauty of life.

Pan:  My favorite symbol of man as beast, Pan represents nature and sex, and appreciation for the simple things in life.  He is the god of outlaws.

Peacock:  They represent immortality in Persian art.  Hindus se the "eyes" on the peacock's tail as stars. Sicilians and Gypsies see the same markings as a sign of the evil eye and consider the birds to be bad luck.

Pegasus:  Was created from shed when Medusa was slain, and represents good coming from evil.

Phoenix:  He destroys himself in a blaze and is reborn again.  A particularly apt tails man for those who are looking for a fresh start.
