Rats:  Often represent death due to their association with the black plaque and traitors for their uncanny ability to know just when to abandon ship.  Tar aficionados would tell you that the rodents are much smarter than they are given credit for.

Raven:  The messengers (and spies) of the Gods,  In Norse mythology Odin had two pet ravens named Thought and Memory.  Ravens symbolize hidden knowledge.

Rose:  This flower symbolizes perfection and romance, it is sacred to Venus, Goddess of love.  The color of the rose affects its meaning; white is purity, red is passion, and pink is lusty love, yellow is communication (unless you're from Texas), blue represents a desire to attain the impossible, and gold symbolizes absolute attainment of goals.

Sandals (winged):  Mercury, the patron god of artists and thieves, wore winged sandals.  Those whose livelihoods fall under his domain might want to consider placing tattooed wings on their ankles. Ouch!

Scars:  Symbolize survival.

Snake:  The snake's ability to shed it's skin led early civilizations to think it was immortal.  With long life comes wisdom, hence the snake symbolizes both immortality and knowledge.  In some cultures, it also symbolizes treasures.

Shell:  Another of the eight Chinese emblems, signifying prosperous journeys, the moon, woman, and hidden treasures.

Ships:  Pompey The Great said, "Living is not necessary but navigation is."  Ships symbolize purposeful journeys.

Skeleton:  A symbol of death, however when the design shoes the skeleton in a life-like pose, it represents a belief in the after life.

Spider:  Symbolizes creative power. In Hindu mythology the spider represents the goddess Maya, who weaves the web of illusions (the world).  the spider's way of passing its day - weave and kill - symbolizes the acceptance of chaos.

Stag:  In many cultures immortality is represented by the "Tree of Life."  The stag also symbolizes life in many myths because its antlers look like branches.  During the Middle Ages in Christian sacred art, the stag was often depicted with a cross between the horns.

Stars:  Are a symbol of the spirit world and of inspiration.  They are also symbols of finding answers to problems because of their navigational marking.

Sun:  Usually a masculine symbol, the sun represents good luck, warmth, friendship, and fertility.

Swastika:  One of man's oldest symbols, it has been found everywhere from pre-Columbian religious art to the Christian catacombs.  There are two types of swastikas; one's arms move clockwise and it represents the movement of the sun through the skies.  The other moves counterclockwise and it represents going against the natural order of things.  Hitler used the latter symbol.

Tiger:  It was associated with Roman God Dionysos.  In China it symbolizes darkness and the new moon.  The tiger is traditionally thought of as a less-tamed beast than the lion.

Toys:  Are both symbols of temptation and reminders of childhood.

Trees:  In mythology the tree functions as a link between the worlds of the Gods and the worlds of men.

Turtle:  In Native American mythology,  North American is known as Turtle Island. Turtle fetishes are given to babies in many tribes to protect them. The turtle symbolizes long life, patience, and strength.

Unicorn:  This horned creature that resembles a horse, symbolizes the qualities of purity and innocence.

Vines:  Are representative of a wish for eternal life.

Waves:  Like the ocean, waves symbolize infinity, both of time and space.

Wolf:  A symbol of courage in ancient Rome.  In Norse mythology, it was Fenris wolf who would devour the sun at the end of the world.  Despite that, in most other cultures (ancient and modern), wolves symbolize loyalty to the family, self discipline, and courage.

Yin-Yang:  In Chinese philosophy and religion the yin-yang represents tow principles, one negative, dark, and feminine (yin), and one positive, bright, and masculine (yang) whose interaction influences the destinies of creatures and things.
